Physical rehabilitation is a multifaceted term that is usually a combination of a number of treatment modalities. Most notably, this term is recognized with prescribed therapeutic exercises.
Therapeutic exercises are used in treatments to reduce pain, improve strength, pre/post-surgical treatment and increase function.
At Durham Rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation is a combination of soft tissue work, mobility work, and prescribed office and home-based exercises.
This state-of-the-art soft tissue and movement based technique treats injury to muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and fascia. Active Release Techniques® (ART®) works by identifying and treating acutely and chronically damaged tissue that generates pain and loss of function. ART® certified practitioners diagnose damaged tissues by palpating the area of injury and evaluating the texture, tightness, adhesions, and movement of the tissue.
Custom foot orthotics are supportive devices prescribed by your practitioners that are utilized to help correct altered biomechanics and provide stabilization during sports and your everyday life.
Common conditions that can benefit from foot orthotics are flat feet (pes planus), high arch (pes cavus), bunions, plantar fasciitis, hip/knee, and low back pain.
Fascial distortion model involves an in-depth physical assessment of the patient’s history, physical and verbal descriptions, along with the cause of injury and relevant orthopedic tests. This leads our practitioners to a specific diagnosis to identify the correct type of soft tissue treatment. Once the altered tissue has been identified, the practitioners utilize hands-on contact dictated by the physical assessment to treat and correct the injury.
Graston® is a form of soft tissue therapy that utilizes specialized tools in order to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial adhesions. Scar tissue and fascial adhesions develop most commonly in the muscles, tendons and ligaments because of overuse and injury.
Graston® is directed at both diagnosis and treatment, where the tools help to detect soft tissue fibrosis and chronic inflammation, as well as therapeutically work to correct the dysfunctional tissue.
Kinesio Taping® is a latex-free therapeutic taping technique that is applied to the body in various fashions directed across joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons to support and stabilize the area.
Kinesio Taping® facilitates the body’s natural healing process and helps to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
Manipulation and mobilization are treatment methods utilized by health care providers that help improve the body’s function and restore health.
They can be described as direct forces applied to joints or tissues which help progress the patient’s recovery.
The benefits of manipulation and mobilization vary by condition; however, the majority of presenting cases see improvements in range of motion, pain reduction, increased strength, and restoration of joint function.
The McKenzie Method® is a complete system of patient care and is trusted and used by practitioners and patients all over the world for back, neck, and extremity problems. Most pain is defined as “mechanical,” which means that the pain is caused by movement, activity or position.
Essentially, the McKenzie theory is founded on the belief that reverse force frequently eliminates pain and restores function. McKenzie relies on the patient’s ability to understand its principles and allows them to have control of their own recovery, reducing their dependency on medications. The McKenzie Method® also supports the body’s innate potential to heal itself naturally.
